Picardy Trip – Over and out (until next year!)

Wow! What a brilliant trip. Made even more brilliant by the outstanding pupils. You have been so well behaved and so enthusiastic about everything we have done this weekend. You and your parents should be really proud of yourselves 😊 Alan, our wonderful coach driver, has also said that you have been by far one of the best groups he has every taken to France! So well done 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Thank you to all the parents too for promptly dropping off and picking up students.

Well done, Rainford, and thank you again for helping to make this trip so fantastic! Have an enjoyable half term break. Hopefully, you’ve still got your voices after the beautiful singing on the way home!!!! (See the videos below!)

Travel Update

We are now on our way back to Rainford. Having got a slightly earlier ferry, we anticipate that we will be back earlier than the expected 11pm, but this will obviously all depend on traffic.

Our driver thinks that we may be back for around 9pm. I will update the blog again as soon as I know any more.

Here are some pictures of Mr Penfold trying out his best TikTok moves…

Beussent Lachelle Chocolatier

It’s our last day in France 😢 this morning we visited the chocolate factory where Simon (France’s answer to Willy Wonka) talked us through the whole process of creating the most beautiful chocolates from scratch.

We practised our French and learned about how ‘le chocolat noir, au lait, et blanc’ is made 😋 we even got to try lots of it too.

Again, we all went a little bit crazy in the chocolate gift shop! Hopefully lots of the chocolates bought won’t be devoured on the coach and might make it home for parents to try!

💫 Disneyland 💫

It’s safe to say we had a magical day yesterday at Disneyland. The queues were not in our favour, but most of us managed to get on some of the best rides and, we’ll warn you now, we spent a fortune in the shops buying cuddly toys, sweets, Christmas decorations, hats, ears, gloves, tea towels, cups, mugs and Miss Seddon even bought some Disney shaped pasta!!

On our return to the Château, we were treated to a delicious meal of chicken, potatoes, cuisses de grenouille 🐸 and escargots 🐌 – lots of the students plucked up the courage to try them, with Jake in particular enjoying them the most! Here are some photos from our day yesterday…

Lochnagar Crater, Thiepval & Newfoundland Memorial

We are on the coach now back to the Château after a very moving and informative afternoon led by Mr Brown.

Our first stop was the Lochnagar Crater…

Next was a visit to Thiepval. Mr Brown had done a lot of research before we visited, which meant that we quickly found the name of a soldier from Rainford engraved on the memorial. We learned that John Thomas was born in Rainford in 1876. He worked on the coalfields of East Lancs as a miner before enlisting in the Army in the Royal Engineers as a ‘tunneller’. His company helped to blow the Lochnagar Crater on the morning of 1st July 1916.

Finally, we visited the Newfoundland Memorial, which was also very moving. We walked through the trenches and reflected on what it must have been like for the soldiers.

Rue Tour and running away from drop spiders! 🕷🕸

What a fantastic morning we’ve had! We started with a delicious French petit déjeuner of croissants and pain au chocolat. Some of the students were looking quite weary, despite assuring us they didn’t stay up too late chatting and eating sweets!

After breakfast, we headed out for a walking tour of Rue (the town in which we are staying). We learnt that the Château had been occupied by the Germans during World War II and found out that after the war, the town was visited by a circus to celebrate the war being over. We’ll save the story for the students to tell you when they’re back, but here are the videos of the students running quickly under the trees to escape the deadly drop spiders that were accidentally released from the crates of the bananas that were brought in to feed the circus monkeys 🐒🤣🤪 #gullible
